Natural learning

Wambangalang Environmental Education Centre

Wambangalang EEC

Wambangalang EEC is part of the NSW Department of Education’s Environmental Education Centres network. We help students and teachers learn about the environment, sustainability and nature through hands-on learning.

Our environment

Our centre uses the local natural area to make learning active, enjoyable and linked to real life. Outdoor learning helps students feel more connected to nature.

Working with schools

We work with all NSW public and non-government schools, supporting students and staff in sustainability education. Schools can book our centre for our co-curricular learning programs and teacher professional development.

Learning programs

We run hands-on programs for students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Our programs link to student in class learning and are bespoke to suit their needs. All programs support the NSW curriculum and across curricular priorities.

Many of our programs also include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. Students learn about culture, Country and how to care for the environment.

Our staff are trained teachers who are experts in environmental education. They guide students through real-world learning experiences that are active and engaging. Students get to explore, ask questions and think about the world around them. We also give schools activities to do before and after the visit to help keep the learning going.

Our programs include:

  • day trips to our centre or nearby bushland and wetlands
  • Incursion visits to schools
  • Overnight camp programs.

Teacher support

We also support teachers with:

  • workshops for professional learning
  • helpful teaching resources
  • support with planning lessons and programs
  • spaces for staff meetings and student workshops.

The centre sits on Wiradjuri Country.

Bug detectives

Science

Stage 1

Bug Detectives activities provide opportunities for students to explore different insect environments and discuss shelter, food and life cycles. Students have an opportunity to focus on people’s interactions with, and responsibilities towards, these living things and the environments in which they are found.

Riparian zones

Science

Stage 4-6

Students learn to identify the features of riparian zones in river and creek systems. They compare healthy natural riparian zones with a section of degraded riparian zone. Students construct: a transect of aquatic, riparian and agriculture zones; and a food web to represent the trophic interactions in a healthy riparian zone.

Students are presented with information to identify features of healthy and unhealthy riparian zones. Walk along the creek bank and identify features of healthy and unhealthy riparian zones.
Consider the impact agriculture practices have on waterways.
Construct a transect on the display board with laminated pictures and labels and assess their placement. Draw a food web that shows a healthy riparian zone.

Worksheets are available for students to show their understanding of concepts.
